Ex-pats will know what I’m talking about, but I also know there will be some travelers out there who have had a Scottish meal, or particular food that they will crave upon returning home. I am always trying to recreate recipes from my travels, but most of the Scottish recipes here, are the ones I grew up eating.

WARNING: beware of which Scottish recipes you find on the internet. Some sites with Scottish names are simply NOT Scottish at all. 🥲 I am horrified at some of the recipes that I see for Scottish dishes–it’s very sad that people are making them and thinking they’re authentic.

Here’s a classic Scottish soup: Scotch broth.

Luckily, Scottish food is quite simple and so are the recipes. Remember, these are just 11 recipes from my site. I have many more and am constantly adding to the list (I’ve since added a few “bonus” recipes” below! To see all of the Scottish recipes on my site, simply type “Scottish” in the search bar at the top.

Edited January 2019: I’ve just added a list of Scottish recipes for a Burns Night Supper!

Consequently, one of the reasons I started this page is to dispel the myth of “bad British food” and the stereotype of Scots only eating haggis and drinking whisky. I hope this post helps me reach my goal and dispel some of those myths. Scottish fish and chips are on a whole other level, and that’s just one example!

How can anyone say that this food is bland, boring or bad!? And by the way, there’s nothing wrong with a properly prepared haggis, or a good whisky!

Since I’m in Scotland right now, I thought it would be nice to share these with you so that you can enjoy some of the dishes I’ll be enjoying here (sometimes on a daily basis)! I hope you love them, too!

  2. They all look good. I will try the shortbread recipe soon. My fav Scottish dish is Sticky Toffee Pudding. I had it several times in Scotland and I wanted to, but did not, lick the plate! I have made your recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding and think of Scotland. Enjoy your time there!

  3. You had me in stitches at the ELEVEN reference. I loved that video and shared it around, even although the language was a bit, well, OTT but yet so funny. Every time I go into a lift and see eleven on the list of floors, I keep wondering if we had voice technology if we’d be in the same situation?

Love all your recipes and so glad you’ve shared them, since I’ve missed many of them since I discovered your blog. And you’ll never guess? I have that tea towel too that these girdle scones are on. Great list!

  4. I’m Scottish and live in Scotland.
Lentil soup is made with a ham bone and ham stock. NEVER BEEF.

  5. Hello yes I am from Scotland and I would like to know why there is 11 recipies, Sorry but I don’t get the joke.
Perhaps I was to young when immigrated to Canada.

      1. Christina. I lived in Scotland for 5 years and saw that skit, but am pretty sure that is not one that anyone over there really made much of an impression over there or remembers.

        1. What is the actual purpose of this comment, Carol?

Regarding your comment, explain to me how the clip has 11 million views on YouTube if it never made much of an impression? All my friends and family in Scotland absolutely know it, remember it, and still joke about it.

I simply don’t understand some of the comments that people take the time to leave on recipe sites. Rather mind-boggling to me.

          1. Can I just say that I love reading your recipes, they’re always the nearest to my own family recipes.

PS I’m Scottish born and bred and I’m naw gonna lie… I genuinely don’t know anyone from the west of Scotland who doesn’t know that exact sketch 🤣.

It’s been a long running thing for years and helped at the strangest if times. My granda, our big strong yin, had just been told he was in the final stage of cancer. we were solemn in the hospital lift, heading upstairs for what was to be his final days. my mammy said to me, it’s floor 11 hen, I couldn’t stop myself and I started the banter with her before getting a grip, feeling ashamed we’d joked at a time like that.

Silence in the lift, except for our mortified tears… Until a few mins later my Grandas voice pipes up from the bed

‘here Lisa… Where aboots in America you fae? Dublin?!’ 😑😂

naw the exact script, but we let him aff, the Doctors and nurses all burst out laughing, as did the rest of us. some of his very last words and he used them to make his lassies smile, he always faced darkness with humour, we didn’t get it fae a stick ❤️.

Anywho I just wanted to share that for some reason, the thumbs got a wee bit carried away though sorry, just ignore the sheer volume of words I just hit ye wae and thanks again for the recipes ❤️🤣

  6. Hi. Thought you were including a recipe for Fly Cemetery (not sure I got the name right)?

My grandmother made what we called “curn cakes” which I believe are the same thing or very similar.

You replied.to.a FB post on this topic and I signed up.for your emails as you said you were posting the recipe.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Linda! So glad you got my message on Facebook. That is a separate post because I’ve never published the recipe yet. I am sending you a copy of the recipe right now to your email address so check your spam. I have the post scheduled to publish later this month. :)
