Scotland may seem like an enigma to those who haven’t visited: the national animal is the Unicorn, the landscapes are sprawling and filled with highland cows and reindeer, and the Scots eat haggis (a sustainable practice if you can’t get on board with its composition).
I grew up eating and cooking many of these dishes, while others I have encountered and loved on subsequent visits back to Scotland.

Since I’m currently traveling in Scotland, I thought it would be nice to share some Scottish recipes that I have been enjoying during my time here. I am focusing on savory/savoury recipes, but I have many other Scottish recipes, including Scottish desserts and traditional recipes for Burns Night.

Contrary to popular belief, Scottish food is not usually “bland.” You’ll never find unseasoned meat or potatoes in a recipe. Instead, many of these recipes rely on quality ingredients and the umami flavor which comes from flavorful meats, stocks, and broths.
Some of these dishes are great to have on hand for easy for grab-and-go meals, like sausage rolls or bridies, which are typically found in pubs, service stations, and train stations around Scotland.
Check out my collection of Scottish dessert recipes!
Other recipes, such as steak pie, are traditionally eaten on New Year’s Day (or Hogmanay), as a slower meal to celebrate with family and friends.

It’s hard to choose but I’m always (always!) up for a really good fish & chips, and I’m certain yours is fantastic! :-) ~Valentina
Love your roundup of delicious Scottish recipes, Christina. You’re making me feel all patriotic. Heaven knows why, but my Scottish accent gets stronger the longer I’m away from Scotland! The funniest thing, is my Grandpa alternated between mince and tatties and steak pie – never had fish and chips, even although he was a fishmonger in Musselburgh!
Oh my! I cannot imagine not having fish and chips when working with all that fresh and top quality fish! Maybe he didn’t like fish?
Who doesn’t love shortbread and savory pies? But the one that really catches my eye is the haggis. I’ve never had it, and I never knew it could look so attractive.
It’s given a bad reputation, but so many people love it!
What a lovely assortment of recipes! Enjoy your travels. I hope to get to Scotland one day. I want to try haggis on its home turf!
The best place to have it! Thank you, Frank!
