Italian Sausage Skewers
These are so easy, there is no real need for a recipe (but I’ve included a printable one below, anyway), so there’s no excuse not to make them at your next barbecue! Mix up the hot dog and hamburger menu for a change. Grab some good quality Italian sausages (Italian sausages shouldn’t have ingredients like “sugar, corn syrup, nitrates/nitrites” etc.), and some chunks of veggies and skewer away!
Trader Joe’s Sicilian sausages are one of my favorites, and I used onion and red pepper, but you can use any vegetables and/or mushrooms you like. Try using different colored peppers, zucchini, or pearl onions for example. If you use wooden skewers, soak them for about an hour before using them.
You can serve these with a lovely garden salad!
To get started, drizzle oil over your chosen vegetables/mushrooms which have been cut into “skewerable” pieces.
Next, add the cut up sausage and pieces of veg intermittently on the skewer. I like to make them all exactly the same, but that’s the Type A personality in me. Make them however you like them, then just barbecue these babies!
You can also put these under the broiler/grill if you don’t have the barbecue going–that’s what I did this time, as I took these for a “Shakespeare in the Park picnic.” Just turn them every few minutes once they’re browned on every side.
And if you think they look delicious, they tasted even better!

Italian Sausage Skewers
A unique way to serve sausages and veg.
Ingredients
- 1 lb or 5 Italian sausage links, hot or mild
- 1 onion, cut into squares
- 1 red pepper, cut into squares
Instructions
- Cut the sausage into 4 equally sized pieces.
- Starting with the pepper squares, thread the sausage and veg onto a skewer, ending with a red pepper at the end. Brush with olive oil if desired, but not necessary.
- Grill over a hot bbq or under a hot broiler, turning often, until fully cooked.
- Serve with rice, a salad, some potatoes or rapini and some fresh, crusty bread.
Notes
- Feel free to use other sausage and other vegetable combinations, for example, bratwurst sausages. You can use mushrooms, green and yellow peppers and zucchini slices, too.

Christina, this looks SO tasty! Perfect for summer on the grill. Just add a salad and dinner is ready. :-) xo Valentina
Thank you, Valentina! You are right; just a salad with these and dinner is served!
Thanks Christina, for this inspiration! It’s what’s for dinner tonight!! We dug up our potatoes so I’m going to parboil the little guys and see if they stay on the skewer.
That sounds good, but like you said, “if” they’ll stay on the skewer! Good luck, Kathy!
I’ll let you know… 🤞
If anyone is wondering, that worked great! I suggest it. It’s a one-pot meal…on a skewer.
Hahaha! Love it! Thanks for the update, glad it worked, Kathy! :)
I actually have some Italian sausages in the fridge, waiting for this treatment over the weekend! Yum… :-)
Of course you do! :)
Skewers are my favourite thing on a BBQ. With a tasty marinade you end up with something really special.
And no marinade needed on these sausages! So easy!
Great timing for the BBQ, Christina. Looking good!
This is a great recipe for any BBQ or summer party!
It’s a crowd-pleaser, for sure!
Oh yes, this is such a quick and easy idea. Love the idea of using sausages. It makes them a bit more interesting.
It does, especially for entertaining!
