All you need is a few simple ingredients: flatbread, butter, ham, and cheese. If making in bulk, it’s super affordable to make these with ingredients from Costco, like I did.
Pinwheels are a classic on any catering spread. They’re perfect for game day, and ham and cheese pinwheels are an easy and protein-filled sandwich for packed school lunches. My personal go-to pinwheel recipe for my kids growing up were these cucumber and cream cheese sandwich rolls.
Ham and cheese pinwheels, especially with the optional addition of lettuce or other veggies, offer a bit more nutrition. Really, the possibilities are endless, as long as you have flat bread that can be rolled (I like using lavash) and sandwich filling.
If you’ve ever had a jambon beurre baguette in France, you’ll know how delicious just three simple ingredients can be.
Add some lettuce, and it’s another level! It’s so simple to get creative with these roll up sandwiches. Try making all these pinwheel sandwiches: ham and lettuce, club and Caprese!
Can I Make Ham and Cheese Pinwheel Sandwiches Ahead?
You can definitely make ham and cheese pinwheel sandwiches ahead of time! Just be sure to keep them sealed and refrigerated for up to a day ahead of when you’d like to serve them. They will last longer than a day, but I don’t advise serving older sandwiches as they do taste best fresh.
Can I Freeze Ham and Cheese Pinwheel Sandwiches?
No, you should not freeze these pinwheel sandwiches or any other ham and cheese sandwich for best results.

How to Assemble Ham & Cheese Pinwheel Sandwiches
Butter the lavash bread generously.
I love Lewis Road Creamery butter from New Zealand.
Top with slices of ham.
Next, add the cheese slices and optional: add lettuce (see below). Start rolling from the short end.
Place the roll seam side down.
Using a serrated bread knife, cut the sandwich roll in half, and then in quarters.
Secure each piece using a sandwich pick, or place into a tray tightly so that they don’t unroll (I recommend the picks.)
To Make Ham and Cheese Pinwheels with Lettuce
Follow the directions above with butter, ham and cheese, but before rolling, add a layer of lettuce.
I find it helpful to remove the stem of the lettuce leaves beforehand.
Roll as with the original ham and cheese pinwheels. Slice into quarters and secure with large sandwich picks.
It’s nice to serve both types of sandwiches together so everyone can choose their favorite. I love mine with lettuce, what about you?
