If kumquat recipes elude you, these are for you. You can use those tiny citrus fruits (that most people just don’t know what to do with) for dishes from breakfast to cocktails–there’s something for everyone!

kumquats on a tree

Kumquats are a winter fruit here in Southern California. While I have a small kumquat tree, it produces a lot of fruit, so I need a lot of kumquat recipes.

Many of my neighbors have kumquat trees, and kumquat bushes, too. However, after discussing their kumquat situation, the consensus is that almost no one consumes the fruit. In fact, they don’t even pick these golden gems because they just don’t know what to do with them, which is a terrible shame. Even just using them as a garnish is a step in the right direction!

Kumquats are wonderful miniature citrus fruits which have a rind that is sweeter than their juice! You can read about how to eat a kumquat (to make it taste sweeter.)

If you find yourself with an abundance of kumquats and no idea what to do with them, you are not alone. Inspired by neighbors whose kumquat trees were producing fruit they didn’t know how to use, I have put together this collection of kumquat recipes to help you make the most of this wonderfully versatile citrus fruit: from savory kumquat avocado toast and kumquat marmalade to sweet kumquat desserts.

  1. I have a Trader Joe’s bag half filled with kumquats. First on my list is your jam, second is them upside down cake! I already made my own version of candied kumquats… I think I will do a chutney, too!

  2. Such a great idea to put together a collection of kumquat recipes! You are so right, most people don’t know what to do with them. That upside down cake is calling for me and I’ll never turn down a martini!

  3. Ever since you showed us how to eat a kumquat, it has changed my opinion on those gems completely! Seriously, I had no idea how to treat them before (well, truth be told, we don’t have kumquat trees here) and now I’ll plop the odd one into a Spritz. It’s wonderful.
Absolutely LOVE all the recipes you’ve posted here, Christina – and just look at that liqueur too.

  4. Kumquats are a truly unappreciated fruit IMO. What a terrific line up of recipes using kumquats! Now, to go pilfer some from my neighbor’s tree and get started on your gorgeous cocktail!
