Homemade Pita Chips for Snacks and Dips

Homemade pita chips are so good, you might not wait until your pita bread goes stale before you make them!

I hate to waste food, so I’m always repurposing it! Like these pita chips that I made from stale pita bread.

I didn’t need breadcrumbs (and pita bread doesn’t make the best breadcrumbs, anyway) so I decided to cut them up, add some garlic, olive oil and garlic salt, and voilà–a great snack is on hand!

pita chips with Redmonds Real Garlic salt

While we love homemade garlic pita chips, you and your family may not, so you can easily skip the garlic and use plain salt. These chips are perfect for scooping up healthy homemade hummus or even tzatziki sauce.

Tzatziki Sauce

There’s also no rush to eat them as they’ll last much longer than the pita bread would. However, you’ll probably find that they’re a wee bit addictive with the crunch and the garlic flavor combined! And have you seen how expensive these crunchy pita chips are in the grocery store? I can’t believe a small package is $7.00  or more.

Another way to flavor homemade pita chips is to make them into a sweet snack by using butter instead of oil and cinnamon sugar instead of the garlic and salt.

Both are very tasty options! You’ll see how easy homemade pita chips are to make, too!

Arrange the pieces on a cookie sheet then put the oil mixture together.

Add the minced garlic, salt, and garlic powder (if using) to the oil and stir together.

Garlic oil

Using a pastry brush, brush the bread with the oil on both sides. Just add more oil to the bowl if you don’t have enough. Next, sprinkle the salt and garlic powder on top of both sides of the oil brushed pita pieces.

Place the baking tray (or trays) in the preheated oven and bake for about 4 or 5 minutes. Remove from the oven, turn each chip over and continue to bake for another 5 minutes or so. You can decide how dark and crunchy you like them. This is how I like them~

  1. Wasting food is one of my pet peeves also. I made pita chips for a football party, and everyone loved them, they had no idea I repurposed some stale food :)
