Cherry turnovers a perfect pastry for breakfast or for an afternoon treat with a cup of tea or coffee, but they’re also incredibly easy to make! Use fresh cherries, or frozen cherries, to make them all year long.

Cherry turnovers are a delightful pastry which seem to be extremely underrepresented in the realm of turnovers and fruit pastries, in general.

With a handful of ingredients, you can be enjoying these crispy, flaky and luscious treats in just about an hour, any time of year, but especially during cherry season! Cherries are one of the best fruits you can eat and cook with! Puff pastry cherry turnovers are my favorite for the ease of making them, and the crisp results.

One of my very first recipes was for cherry pie filling, which is what you’ll need to fill the puff pastry.

Brush with a very slightly beaten egg white (do not let it get frothy, just to make it easier to brush), and sprinkle with a coarse sugar. Another option is to omit the sprinkled sugar and just dust the cherry turnovers with powdered sugar after baking.

Bake for approximately 20-25 mins. until golden brown.

Don’t worry if some of the filling escapes, it still tastes perfectly fine. Allow to cool before serving.

  • Puff pastry instructions: 16-18 oz pkg cut into 5″ x 5″ (12.5 cm x 12.5 cm) squares
  • Tip: if you have two sheets of puff pastry, keep the one you’re not working with in the fridge as it’s more difficult to work with when it gets warm.

  • I recommend Trader Joe’s frozen puff pastry as it is made with butter, however, it is only seasonal.

  1. Be still my heart, cherry is a favored flavor by me. I once lived near a pick your own cherry orchard & I would go & come home with a boatload of cherries each year. I even purchased a cherry pitter, but the old timey one, not plastic. No longer living next to an orchard I now purchase my cherries but still, fresh cherries are the bomb. Thanks for sharing this recipe, it’s at the top of my list for baking.
