Glorified Rice
Glorified rice is a vintage American recipe that is essentially rice pudding with additions such as canned fruit, and is served cold. It’s a delicious treat on hot days!

If you love rice pudding, I bet you’ll adore glorified rice, as well. I have loved it since I was a little girl.

My creamy baked rice pudding recipe is one of the very first posts that I published, two years after I started sharing recipes online. This is a typically British recipe and is honestly one of the easiest recipes on my site. After placing the few ingredients in the ovenproof dish, only two stirs are required, and it’s such a creamy and delicious dessert!

This creamy baked rice pudding is the base for this glorified rice recipe. My paternal grandmother was the one who used to make this dessert, and taught my mother when we first came to the US. While my father’s mother was born in Italy, she lived in Scotland when my dad was born, and later moved to the Midwestern US.

While I can’t claim that this is the authentic way to make glorified rice, I can tell you, it’s probably one of the best recipes. After seeing “what was out there” I was surprised to see this dessert being coined as a “salad.” Apparently this no salad-salad phenomenon is a Midwestern thing!
If you like rice pudding, try these Italian rice-based fritters, popular for the feast of St. Joseph.
One recipe was made by boiling rice, and adding the other ingredients which often include marshmallows and fake whipped topping, afterwards. This is definitely not the best way to cook and use rice for a sweet treat.

Even if you are used to making another version of glorified rice, I will ask you to try this recipe. It’s extremely simple and basic, and you can add other ingredients like more pineapple, and marshmallows, if you like them. However, my point is that this rice pudding base is already super creamy and delicious, so there’s truly no need to add any more cream. If you want no cream, maybe a French rice pudding (riz au lait) is for you.

Is Glorified Rice Served Hot or Cold?
Glorified rice is served cold and should be chilled before serving. It’s a refreshing dessert that’s more in sync with hot weather.
