Italian Sausage Skewers

Italian sausage skewers are a unique way to serve sausages at your next barbecue. However, don’t let that delay you as you can also cook them in your broiler or grill, inside!

These are so easy, there is no real need for a recipe (but I’ve included a printable one below, anyway), so there’s no excuse not to make them at your next barbecue! Mix up the hot dog and hamburger menu for a change. Grab some good quality Italian sausages (Italian sausages shouldn’t have ingredients like “sugar, corn syrup, nitrates/nitrites” etc.), and some chunks of veggies and skewer away!

Trader Joe’s Sicilian sausages are one of my favorites, and I used onion and red pepper, but you can use any vegetables and/or mushrooms you like. Try using different colored peppers, zucchini, or pearl onions for example. If you use wooden skewers, soak them for about an hour before using them.

You can serve these with a lovely garden salad!

To get started, drizzle oil over your chosen vegetables/mushrooms which have been cut into “skewerable” pieces.

Next, add the cut up sausage and pieces of veg intermittently on the skewer. I like to make them all exactly the same, but that’s the Type A personality in me. Make them however you like them, then just barbecue these babies!

You can also put these under the broiler/grill if you don’t have the barbecue going–that’s what I did this time, as I took these for a “Shakespeare in the Park picnic.” Just turn them every few minutes once they’re browned on every side.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian sausage links hot or mild
  • 1 onion cut into squares
  • 1 red pepper cut into squares

Instructions

  • Cut the sausage into 4 equally sized pieces.
  • Starting with the pepper squares, thread the sausage and veg onto a skewer, ending with a red pepper at the end. Brush with olive oil if desired, but not necessary.
  • Grill over a hot bbq or under a hot broiler, turning often, until fully cooked.
  • Serve with rice, a salad, some potatoes or rapini and some fresh, crusty bread.

Notes

  • Feel free to use other sausage and other vegetable combinations, for example, bratwurst sausages. You can use mushrooms, green and yellow peppers and zucchini slices, too.
